Johnston<\/td><td>36562984<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\">Tu\u00e9<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;height:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-d0bbbce0 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-container-core-column-is-layout-e3d1c41b wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>En fin de matin\u00e9e du samedi 27 Mai 1944, alors que plusieurs formations de bombardiers quadrimoteurs am\u00e9ricains B-24 Liberator survolent le village de Courth\u00e9zon, au Nord d\u2019Avignon, en direction de leur objectif, la gare de N\u00eemes, un appareil est touch\u00e9 de plein fouet par la Flak lourde et litt\u00e9ralement disloqu\u00e9 par l&#8217;explosion qui s&#8217;ensuivie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Une pluie de vestiges incandescents va ainsi aller s&#8217;\u00e9craser sur un large p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre du quartier Saint-Laurent, localis\u00e9 au sud-est de Courth\u00e9zon, des dix jeunes aviateurs am\u00e9ricains qui composaient son \u00e9quipage aucun ne survivra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parmi les six objectifs (moyens de communication) du sud de la France ce jour l\u00e0, \u00e9tait inclus le complexe ferroviaire de N\u00eemes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ainsi, les strat\u00e8ges de la 15th USAAF ont-ils dirig\u00e9 pour cela un Bomber-Wing enti\u00e8rement compos\u00e9s de B-24 Liberator, le 55\u00e8me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ordre d\u2019organisation par groupe : 460th BG compos\u00e9 de 33 B-24 sur 36 pr\u00e9vus (3 appareils en effet ne purent prendre part au raid de par divers ennuis techniques) qui attaqueront l\u2019extr\u00eame Ouest de la gare, soit les ateliers de r\u00e9paration et la rotonde \u00e0 l&#8217;altitude de 6600 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; 465th BG : pr\u00e9sentant 29 avions sur 35 pr\u00e9vus (6 ayant d\u00fb abandonner la mission) qui bombarderont l&#8217;Est de la gare, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 les voies se s\u00e9parent pour rallier Avignon et\/ou Tarascon, \u00e0 une altitude variant de 6300 \u00e0 6400 m\u00e8tres<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; 464 BG : 28 avions (7 \u00e9tant retourn\u00e9s \u00e0 la base) devront d\u00e9truire le centre du triage aux altitudes de 6000 et 6500 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; 485 BG : avec 37 avions comme pr\u00e9vu par le plan de vol, qui auront \u00e0 charge d&#8217;attaquer le quart Est de la gare \u00e0 l&#8217;altitude de 6000 m\u00e8tres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour escorte, le 55\u00e8me Wing aura \u00e0 ses c\u00f4t\u00e9s les P-38 Lightning et P-51 Mustang du 306\u00e8me Fighter Wing devant prendre place au sein de la formation \u00e0 vue du Cap Roux sur les c\u00f4tes fran\u00e7aises de l\u2019Est\u00e9rel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaque appareil emporte 2 tonnes de bombes de 500 pounds (environ 226 kgs, soit 8 bombes par quadrimoteur).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s avoir travers\u00e9 la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, les avions am\u00e9ricains d\u00e9passent les c\u00f4tes fran\u00e7aises, puis s&#8217;enfoncent dans les terres. Le survol d&#8217;Avignon effectu\u00e9, le mont Ventoux est laiss\u00e9 sur tribord tandis que la formation entame un large virage en direction du Sud\/Ouest, vers leur I.P (initial point).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est le moment que choisi la d\u00e9fense anti-a\u00e9rienne allemande pour entrer en action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plusieurs quadrimoteurs des 460 et 465 BG ouvrant la voie ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 touch\u00e9s. Cela veut dire que les artilleurs allemands ont tr\u00e8s bien calcul\u00e9 leur vis\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorsque se pr\u00e9sente le 464 BG dans sa course \u00e0 l&#8217;objectif, les tirs de Flak sont encore plus nourris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il est un peu plus de 10h15, lorsqu&#8217;un B-24 est violemment touch\u00e9 sous son aile droite, entre les moteurs 3 et 4. Imm\u00e9diatement, l&#8217;explosion a pour effet de sectionner l&#8217;aile droite et faire s&#8217;affaisser l&#8217;appareil du m\u00eame c\u00f4t\u00e9, l&#8217;amenant \u00e0 s&#8217;engager dans un violent tonneau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Le Liberator passe soudainement sur le dos en piquant du nez, alors que d&#8217;\u00e9normes flammes en jaillissent. Une seconde explosion se produit alors faisant litt\u00e9ralement \u00e9clater la cellule.
