Durant les op\u00e9rations a\u00e9riennes alli\u00e9es men\u00e9es pour d\u00e9truire les moyens de communication de l&#8217;occupant dans le sud de la France, les 3 groupes de B-24 Liberator du 49th Bomber Wing de la 15th Air Force (451st, 461st et 484th BG) avaient pour mission de d\u00e9truire le terrain d&#8217;aviation de Salon de Provence, localis\u00e9 dans le sud de la vall\u00e9e du Rh\u00f4ne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si plusieurs quadrimoteurs des 3 groupes de bombardement concern\u00e9s seront plus ou moins endommag\u00e9s par les tirs des d\u00e9fenses allemandes durant tout le survol du territoire fran\u00e7ais, un seul sera abattu bien avant son arriv\u00e9e sur l&#8217;objectif, celui du S\/Lt Gerald J. Maroney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C&#8217;est en effet lors de l&#8217;approche du Key-Point, soit le cap d&#8217;Antibes, \u00e0 l&#8217;Est de Cannes, que la Flak prend \u00e0 partie le 461st BG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le B-24 # 42-52399, surnomm\u00e9 Flak Finder par son \u00e9quipage, est mortellement touch\u00e9 sous son aile droite, deux moteurs en feu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le pilote largue imm\u00e9diatement les bombes en mer, et prend une direction plein nord, cap sur la Suisse neutre. Mais il est aussit\u00f4t avertit par le op\u00e9rateur radio Donald E. Ellis, qui l&#8217;informe que les flammes touchent la queue de l&#8217;appareil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survolant maintenant les pr\u00e9-Alpes, l&#8217;ordre d&#8217;\u00e9vacuer est donn\u00e9. Les dix hommes r\u00e9ussiront \u00e0 se parachuter, et toucher terre vivants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le mitrailleur de sabord Leon Zinner sera bless\u00e9 lors de sa r\u00e9ception (jambe bris\u00e9e) et fait prisonnier tout comme 4 autres de ses compagnons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quant \u00e0 leur appareil, il s&#8217;est d\u00e9sint\u00e9gr\u00e9 au sommet de la montagne du pic de l&#8217;Aiglo, village de Le Mas (au nord de Thorenc), dans un incendie rageur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Les 5 aviateurs restant seront cach\u00e9s par des familles locales, puis r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9s par les troupes US ayant particip\u00e9es au d\u00e9barquement de Provence. Par la suite ils quitteront l&#8217;Europe pour les USA le 11 septembre 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quant aux 5 prisonniers, depuis d\u00e9tenus en Allemagne, ils ne seront lib\u00e9r\u00e9s qu&#8217;\u00e0 la fin du mois d&#8217;avril 1945 par l&#8217;arm\u00e9e du g\u00e9n\u00e9ral Patton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 27 mai 1992, revenaient sur les lieux du crash du B-24 Flak Finder, les sgt Owen B. Streeper et Alvin L.
