Durant les op\u00e9rations a\u00e9riennes alli\u00e9es men\u00e9es d\u00e9truire les moyens de communication de l&#8217;occupant dans le sud de la France, 2 groupes de B-24 Liberator du 55th Bomber-Wing de la 15th Air Force, les 464th et 465th Bomber-Group, avaient pour mission la mise hors service du noeud ferroviaire de Givors, ville situ\u00e9e \u00e0 une vingtaine de km au Sud de Lyon dans la vall\u00e9e du Rh\u00f4ne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quatre quadrimoteurs appartenant 464th BG seront tr\u00e8s s\u00e9rieusement endommag\u00e9s dont 3 ne rentreront pas \u00e0 leur base temporaire de Gioia del Colle, dans les Pouilles italiennes. Les groupes de bombardiers am\u00e9ricains avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 durement malmen\u00e9s sur leur route de retour, tant par la Flak, que la Luftwaffe, dont les Messerchmitt 109 et Focke Wulf 190 dont les bases \u00e9taient localis\u00e9es a Istres, Salon-de-Provence et les Channoines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le deuxieme appareil perdu portait le matricule militaire (serial number) 41-29412. Surnomm\u00e9 Strictly from Hunger par son \u00e9quipage il \u00e9tait pilot\u00e9 par le capitaine Robert W. Hornbaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durement touch\u00e9 par la Flak au passage des c\u00f4tes de l&#8217;Est\u00e9rel, il fut particuli\u00e8rement pris \u00e0 partie par 4 chasseurs allemands, l&#8217;un d&#8217;eux, un Me 109, r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 \u00e9viter les tirs provenant des tourelles am\u00e9ricaines en plongeant et resurgissant sur la gauche du quadrimoteur tout en lachant des rafales de MG15 (7,92 mm) et de 20 mm provenant de son canon axial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le r\u00e9sultat ne se fit pas attendre : moteur num\u00e9ro 1 incendi\u00e9 (le feu ne pourra pas \u00eatre \u00e9teint), num\u00e9ro 2 avec une perte du r\u00e9gime importante et pression d&#8217;huile baissant dangereusement, tout en d\u00e9gageant un long panache de fum\u00e9e noir\u00e2tre et \u00e9paisse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais ce n&#8217;est pas tout, le c\u00f4t\u00e9 gauche du fuselage a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 cribl\u00e9 d&#8217;impacts et la pompe principale de transvasement de carburant est d\u00e9truite, faisant s&#8217;\u00e9couler au niveau de l&#8217;emplanture de l&#8217;aile gauche un flot de carburant s&#8217;\u00e9chappant par les soutes \u00e0 bombes. Comble de malchance, plusieurs c\u00e2bles de commandes sont sectionn\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malheureusement aussi, le pilote a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9 sur le coup par des \u00e9clats re\u00e7us \u00e0 la t\u00eate et au thorax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C&#8217;est dans ce contexte infernal que l&#8217;appareil, maintenant pilot\u00e9 par le sous-lieutenant Raymond H. Burklund, fort heureusement indemne, s&#8217;\u00e9lance tout de m\u00eame, en perdant de l&#8217;altitude, au-dessus de la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au passage des c\u00f4tes, le B-24 aura encore \u00e9t\u00e9 l&#8217;objet de tirs de la Flak localis\u00e9e au Cap Roux entre Cannes et Saint-Rapha\u00ebl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survolant la mer, la formation de B-24 du 464th BG est alors vue dispara\u00eetre au loin en direction de l&#8217;Italie via la Corse. C\u2019est le moment ou le sous-lieutenant Burklund se rend compte qu&#8217;il lui sera impossible de rallier l\u2019\u00eele de beaut\u00e9, son appareil risquant l\u2019explosion \u00e0 chaque instant !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quittant sa route en virant dans une grande courbe sur la gauche, le B-24 mortellement touch\u00e9 se dirige au droit de Cannes en survolant les \u00eeles de L\u00e9rins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Flak du secteur entre alors en action, tandis que 4 hommes d&#8217;\u00e9quipage (incluant le co-pilote) sautent en parachute. L&#8217;appareil, d\u00e9sormais livr\u00e9 \u00e0 lui-m\u00eame, et dans dans une derni\u00e8re spirale sur sa gauche, va s&#8217;\u00e9craser sur la face Est de la colline de La Croix des Gardes, \u00e9vitant par miracle un d\u00e9sastre en ne s&#8217;abattant pas sur la ville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans l&#8217;\u00e9pave, seront retrouv\u00e9s les corps sans vie du pilote et celui d&#8217;un autre aviateur qui ne sera jamais identifi\u00e9, tout comme aucune trace des 4 autres hommes restant, et pour cause, il se trouve en effet que sur les dix hommes qui composaient l&#8217;\u00e9quipage, 4 ont saut\u00e9 tr\u00e8s au large des c\u00f4tes proven\u00e7ales (ils ne serons jamais retrouv\u00e9s), tandis que pour un de ceux se parachuta au-dessus de Cannes, le s\/sgt Lawrence E. Reinceke, il ne surv\u00e9cut pas au fait que son parachute ne s&#8217;ouvrit pas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il sera retrouv\u00e9 sans vie, face contre terre, \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 2 km \u00e0 l&#8217;Est de l&#8217;endroit o\u00f9 s&#8217;est \u00e9cras\u00e9 son avion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le r\u00e9sultat de cet accident qui mit en \u00e9moi toute la population cannoise sera de 4 disparus, 3 tu\u00e9s (dont 1 non identifi\u00e9), et 3 prisonniers de guerre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>50 ann\u00e9es plus tard, le 4 Juillet 1994, le dernier survivant de ce quadrimoteur, le sergent Alfred R. Karow, qui occupait les fonctions de m\u00e9canicien de bord et mitrailleur de la tourelle dorsale, sur invitation de la municipalit\u00e9 cannoise et d&#8217;A\u00e9ro-Re.L.I.C., revenait sur les lieux du premier et seul parachutage qu&#8217;il effectua de sa vie : Cannes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aussi pr\u00e9sents avec lui, la veuve du pilote, Madame Velma Hornbaker\/Kirby, qui se remaria de nombreuses ann\u00e9e plus tard avec le Dr Vernon Kirby.
