Nous avons retrouv\u00e9 le pilote de cet appareil, le sous-lieutenant Frank G. Chaplick, qui nous raconta avec pr\u00e9cision l\u2019histoire de sa derni\u00e8re et assez terrifiante mission :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapport de F. Chaplik : lors de notre approche sur l&#8217;objectif, le groupe dut effectuer un virage plus prononc\u00e9 sur la gauche pour corriger l&#8217;angle d&#8217;attaque pr\u00e9vu au plan de vol. Notre avion se trouvant sur l&#8217;aile droite de la formation, je me suis retrouv\u00e9 d\u00e9cal\u00e9 et surtout isol\u00e9, pour \u00e9viter un possible risque de collision un certain laps de temps. Cela nous fut fatal, car notre B-17 fut prit \u00e0 partie par les tirs ennemis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avec 2 Moteurs en feu et un troisi\u00e8me qui toussotait, il ne nous restait plus grand chose \u00e0 faire, sinon s&#8217;accrocher aux commandes&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malheureusement, notre op\u00e9rateur-radio et le mitrailleur de sabord avait \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9 durant l&#8217;attaque. Tout aussi terrible, notre mitrailleur arri\u00e8re eu juste la force de nous informer par l\u2019interphone qu\u2019il se mourrait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soudainement, un Me-109 eut la mauvaise id\u00e9e de venir voler de concert quelques instant avec nous et sur notre gauche !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imm\u00e9diatement, le navigateur dirigea les deux 50 de la tourelle de menton sur lui et le cribla litt\u00e9ralement d&#8217;impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#8217;appareil allemand piqua du nez en d\u00e9gageant un long panache de fum\u00e9e noire, tandis que des P-47 arriv\u00e8rent fort heureusement \u00e0 la rescousse stoppant net le combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019un d\u2019eux nous escorta et nous pr\u00eemes un cap direct sur la Corse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u00e0, un appel \u00e0 la tour de contr\u00f4le de Calvi nous fit savoir que la piste \u00e9tait limite pour recevoir un appareil endommag\u00e9 de notre envergure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Je d\u00e9cidais alors, malgr\u00e9 nos 2 moteurs maintenant coup\u00e9s (le feu ayant \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9teint gr\u00e2ce aux extincteurs d&#8217;ailes), de faire un premier passage pour \u00e9valuer le terrain. Nous retrouvant de nouveau sur la mer, j&#8217;effectuais au jug\u00e9 notre approche finale lorsque le troisi\u00e8me moteur touch\u00e9 s&#8217;arr\u00eata sans avertir.N&#8217;ayant plus assez de puissance \u00e0 ce moment pr\u00e9cis et perdant im\u00e9diatement de l&#8217;altitude, je n\u2019avais plus qu&#8217;un seul choix : amerrir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C&#8217;est ainsi que je posais le B-17 sur les flots, tr\u00e8s proche et face \u00e0 la citadelle de Calvi. On devine encore la flaque d&#8217;hydrocarbures, sur la droite, ainsi que le bateau de sauvetage (Air sea rescue britannique) qui arrive. Elle repose par seulement 28 m\u00e8tres de profondeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;une \u00e9poque, certaines personnes avaient eu l&#8217;id\u00e9e de remonter l&#8217;\u00e9pave pour en vendre l&#8217;aluminium. C&#8217;est durant une telle op\u00e9ration, que l&#8217;\u00e9pave fut bris\u00e9e. Plus tard, un plongeur d\u00e9couvrit un portefeuille qui avait appartenu \u00e0 l&#8217;un des mitrailleurs tu\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depuis une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es maintenant, des plongeurs se sont aussi attaqu\u00e9s aux pales des h\u00e9lices&#8230; tandis que le poste de pilotage a derni\u00e8rement \u00e9t\u00e9 arrach\u00e9 par une ancre.
