Riley Jr, qui p\u00e9rit aux commandes de sa machine le 27 janvier 1944.<br>L&#8217;enqu\u00eate men\u00e9e sur cet avion, est \u00e0 rapprocher avec une deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9pave de P-38 d\u00e9couverte intacte par Marcel Camilleri, qui repose \u00e0 l&#8217;envers, \u00e0 moins de 3 milles marins plus \u00e0 l&#8217;Est de La Ciotat dans la baie des Lecques, (Pilote : s\/Lt Harry H. Greenup ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 27 janvier 1944 donc, le 14th Fighter Group de la 15th USAAF, \u00e9quip\u00e9 de P-38 Lightning, est en escorte de bombardiers quadrimoteurs B-17 venant d\u00e9truire le terrain d&#8217;aviation de Salon-de-Provence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous sommes en plein d\u00e9barquement des plages d&#8217;Anzio, et les alli\u00e9s pi\u00e9tinent, car les attaques a\u00e9riennes allemandes sont nombreuses, provenant principalement des bases situ\u00e9es dans les Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le bombardement du terrain de Salon se d\u00e9roulera sous un terrible barrage de Flak, tandis que la chasse allemande n&#8217;est pas en reste : elle est de 3 fois sup\u00e9rieure en nombre \u00e0 l&#8217;escorte alli\u00e9e !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Un B-17 sera abattu (crash au niveau du p\u00e9age de Lan\u00e7on-de-Provence), tandis que 2 P-38 ne rentreront pas\u2026 dont celui de La Ciotat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 15 janvier 1994, nous effectuons notre premi\u00e8re plong\u00e9e de reconnaissance sur le site. J.P. Joncheray nous a donn\u00e9 les rep\u00e8res terrestres :&#8221;\u00e0 nous de travailler d\u00e9sormais pour identifier cette \u00e9pave&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il faudra attendre l&#8217;ann\u00e9e 2000 pour identifier l&#8217;avion gr\u00e0ce a la r\u00e9ception de document d&#8217;archives glan\u00e9s par J. K. Mattison, aux USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous appr\u00eemes ainsi que l&#8217;avion de James G Riley, un P-38 de type G, serial 43-2543, avait disparu en flammes dans les eaux de la baie de La Ciotat, abattus par les tirs combin\u00e9s de la Flak et la chasse allemandes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au mois d&#8217;octobre 2002, nous sommes localis\u00e9s par\u2026 une charmante retrait\u00e9e am\u00e9ricaine du nom de Jean Martin-Riley ! Il s&#8217;agit de la veuve de James qui a eut \u00e9cho, par l&#8217;association des v\u00e9t\u00e9rans du 14th FG avec laquelle nous \u00e9tions en contact, que : &#8220;des plongeurs fran\u00e7ais avaient d\u00e9couverts le P-38 de son mari toujours port\u00e9 disparu !&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il n&#8217;en fallait pas plus pour que madame Riley entreprenne un long voyage par dessus l&#8217;Atlantique et vienne nous rendre visite au mois de mai 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C&#8217;est ainsi qu&#8217;allait \u00eatre d\u00e9pos\u00e9e, sur la surface de la mer et \u00e0 la verticale de l&#8217;\u00e9pave du P-38 de james G.
