Le bimoteur am\u00e9ricain est litt\u00e9ralement recouvert de filets de p\u00eache, et il faudra effectuer plus de 200 plong\u00e9es sur le site, pour retirer tous ces vestiges enchev\u00e9tr\u00e9s avant que l&#8217;\u00e9pave ne retrouve enfin cet aspect fabuleux que nous lui connaissons aujourd&#8217;hui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#8217;histoire de cet avion est \u00e0 rapprocher directement avec celle du P-38 de La Ciotat (pilote s\/lt James G. Riley), car abattu dans les m\u00eames conditions, le m\u00eame jour, \u00e0 seulement quelques minutes d&#8217;intervalles (3 milles marins s\u00e9parent les deux \u00e9paves ) et faisant partie du m\u00eame squadron, m\u00eame Fighter-Group !Le 27 janvier 1944 donc, le 14th Fighter Group de la 15th USAAF, \u00e9quip\u00e9 de P-38 Lightning, est en escorte de bombardiers quadrimoteurs B-17 venant d\u00e9truire le terrain d&#8217;aviation de Salon-de-Provence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous sommes en plein d\u00e9barquement des plages d&#8217;Anzio, et les alli\u00e9s pi\u00e9tinent, car les attaques a\u00e9riennes allemandes sont nombreuses, provenant principalement des bases situ\u00e9es dans les Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le bombardement du terrain de Salon se d\u00e9roulera sous un terrible barrage de Flak, tandis que la chasse allemande n&#8217;est pas en reste : elle est de 3 fois sup\u00e9rieure en nombre \u00e0 l&#8217;escorte alli\u00e9e !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Un B-17 sera abattu (crash au niveau du p\u00e9age de Lan\u00e7on-de-Provence), tandis que 2 P-38 ne rentreront pas&#8230; dont celui des Lecques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le P-38 des Lecques sera identifi\u00e9 par Marcel Camilleri gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la d\u00e9couverte d&#8217;une plaque (le radio call number) toujours rivet\u00e9e sur le tableau de bord. Il s&#8217;agissait du P-38 G 15-LO, # 43-2545, pilot\u00e9 par le s\/lt Harry H. Greenup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrairement \u00e0 son malchanceux compagnon de combat qui disparu avec sa machine dans les eaux de La Ciotat, Harry Greenup effectuat un amerrissage parfait, et se retrouva \u00e0 nager tandis que son avion sombrait. Ce d\u00e9placement est d\u00fb \u00e0 une action de chalutage ancienne. Les volets sont sortis, le train tricycle rentr\u00e9, prouvant que l&#8217;amerrissage a \u00e9t\u00e9 effectu\u00e9 dans les r\u00e8gles de l&#8217;art par le s\/lt H. Les 2 autres .50 (4 au total) ne sont pas visibles du fait de l&#8217;important concr\u00e9tionnement marin.
