August 4, 1944, second mission of bombardment made by the medium bombers French B-26 Marauder II/52 Franche Comté group taking off Villacidro, in Sardinia.

Target : France, with the attack of the railway bridge Charles-Albert (or of Gillette), located above ten km in the north of the delta of the Var's river (western of Nice).

The flight is composed of 5 Marauder of Franche Comté (integrated within a formation of several other twin-engines).

Few before the arrival on the target, French B-26 can't avoid an important cloudy mass which close their road, being literally grabbed in .

Few minutes later, and again in the blue sky, it appears that the objective is behind them, and it is without having released the 4 bombs of 500 kg which each plane carried, that the Franche Comté returns to its base. But an important problem appeared: a plane is missing!

It was the B-26 C 45-MO, serial 42-107726.

The inquire made on the causes of the disappearance of this plane let know that during the crossing of the imposing cloudy mass, the group had to reduce its flight's speed, making captain Cartier's B-26, which was in last position, unfortunately victim of an unhooking... not leaving any chance to this young crew.

The wrecks of the B-26 and its men will be found at 7700 feet high, resting in a rock fall by a local shepherd, in october 1944, northern side of the combe of Scluos located between the Mercière higths and Saléze, not far from the Italian border.

It is on Aéro-Re.L.I.C.'s initiative, that was sealed not far from the fall point, July 31, 1994, with the authorizations of the direction of the National park of Mercantour, a plate in the memory of this French crew fallen to the field from honor for France.

The inaugural ceremony who was charged of emotion, was with the presence of Franche Comté's veterans (AAB-26 Marauder) having expressly made displacement for a last good-bye to their comrades too early missing.
